An absolute dating technique using the growth rings of trees. The combined oak and pine tree-ring chronologies of Hohenheim University are the backbone of the Holocene radiocarbon calibration for central Europe; see Friedrich et al. Radiocarbon 46, 3, 1111. Tree rings represent a very valuable natural archive on past debris-flow occurrence as they may record the impact of events in their tree-ring series; see Bollschweiler and Stoffel (2010) PPG 34, 5, Vandekerckhove et al. (2001) Catena 45, and Malik (2008) Geomorph. 93, 3–4. Dendrogeomorphology is the dendrochronological interpretation of geomorphic processes.
