Diode lasers also are capable of generating tightly defined optical signals in very small spectral ranges, or windows. Diode lasers also generate signals at wavelengths longer than 850 nm. In these higher transmission windows at 1310 nm or 1550 nm, the signals attenuate much less and, therefore, can travel much farther without being repeated or amplified. In long-haul, high speed, carrier-class fiber optic transmission systems (FOTS), these narrowly defined windows allow the multiplexing of a number of wavelengths through a process known as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). Fabry-Perot lasers and distributed feedback (DFB) lasers are two specific types of diode laser commonly used in such networks.
