short haul modem Synonymous with limited-distance modem. A type of modem used in applications where line drivers fail in terms of either bandwidth or distance. Short-haul modems can work at distances between 5,000–10,000 feet, with distance sensitive to signaling speed, i.e., the higher the signaling speed, the shorter the allowable distance. Short haul modems are generally used over private lines and hardwired links but can also operate over non-loaded local loop facilities.
