Grand Alliance An ad hoc advisory group formed by the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in May 1993, comprising AT&T, General Instruments, Zenith, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Thompson Consumer Electronics, Philips Consumer Electronics, and the David Sarnoff Research Center.The efforts of the Grand Alliance led to a set of recommended Digital TV (DTV) standards for Standard Definition TV (SDTV) and High Definition TV (HDTV). Those recom- mended standards were tested and documented by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) in the summer of 1995 and approved by the FCC in December 1996.
