In 1787 he became master’s mate under Captain William Bligh on HMS Bounty, a ship sailing for the Pacific. In April 1789 Christian seized the ship and cast Bligh adrift on account of his alleged tyranny. In 1790 the crew settled on Pitcairn Island, where Christian was probably killed by Tahitians.
