A large, dark brown and white bird of prey and the only member of the family Pandionidae. It has a short, strongly hooked bill, long, pointed wings, and long toes and claws, the outer toe reversible, and scaly soles to its feet, helping it to hold prey. It inhabits coastal areas and fresh water, nests in trees or on the ground, and feeds on fish. It occurs worldwide.
