A class of research nanosatellites approximately 10 cm long, have a volume of about 1 litre, and weigh about 1.33 kg. CubeSats are flown as auxiliary payloads on previously planned missions generally with a purpose of Earth observation, to help facilitate amateur radio communications, or to demonstrate spacecraft technologies targeted for use in small satellites.
A PhoneSat Cubesat developed at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, that uses commercially available smartphone technology to collect data on the long-term performance of consumer technologies used in spacecraft.
