  • 1. Designating the part of an animal that is to the rear, i.e. that follows when the animal is moving. In humans and bipedal animals (e.g. kangaroos) the posterior surface is equivalent to the dorsal surface.

    2. Designating the side of a flower or axillary bud that faces towards the flower stalk or main stem, respectively. Compare anterior.

Geology and Earth Sciences

  • In animals, applied to the part of the body that is to the rear when the animal is moving forward; in bipedal animals the dorsal surface is the posterior surface. In plants, that part of the flower or axillary bud that faces towards the flower stalk or main stem.

Economics

  • In Bayesian econometrics, the revised belief, or the distribution of a parameter obtained by Bayesian updating of the prior, or the initially assumed distribution of the parameter, given the sample of the data. See also Bayesian inference.
