A popular relational database management system. PostgeSQL began as the POSTGRES project at the University of California, Berkeley, in the 1980s, and the first version was released in 1989. The POSTGRES project ended in 1994, but the code was released onto the Web in 1996; an open-source version 6.0 was released as PostgreSQL in 1997. Development has continued as an open source project, and the current (2019) version is 11.3.
