A concept whereby communications-oriented computer equipment with different protocols can be interconnected by means of a data network. The principal methods being developed are those of the major computer vendors and of the International Standards Organization (ISO). The term open systems interconnection is specifically related to the efforts of the ISO and its seven-layer reference model.
