The activation of the fault-protection system on a spacecraft. Intricate safing routines are also called ‘contingency modes’. The system is operated by an on-board computer that is able to shut down or reconfigure the spacecraft's components to prevent damage during an emergency. The safing system may also automatically search to re-establish broken communications. Switching to safing may temporarily interrupt scientific observations on board the spacecraft.
