A standard scale, introduced in 1955 by meteorologists of the US Weather Bureau, for reporting tropical cyclones. It adds a further five categories to the Beaufort scale, together with the damage likely at each level. The former inclusion of the surface atmospheric pressure at the centre of the low pressure system and the size of the storm surge it causes has been dropped. See wind strength.
