  • A very fine-grained white rock composed of the skeletal remains of microscopic sea creatures, such as plankton, and consisting largely of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). It is used in toothpaste and cosmetics. It should not be confused with blackboard ‘chalk’, which is made from calcium sulphate.

  • Porous, fine-grained rock, predominantly composed of the calcareous skeletons of micro-organisms, e.g. coccolithophores and foraminifera. The Chalk Formations of the Upper Cretaceous of Europe form the White Cliffs of Dover and the cliffs south of Calais.
