The final period of the Proterozoic eon. It began 630 (+5, −30) Ma ago and ended 542 (± 0.3) Ma ago. It commenced with the end of the Varinger (Marinoan) glaciation and a distinct change in the 13C content of sedimentary deposits, and ended with the last appearance of Treptichnus pedum, a trace fossil. The Ediacaran followed the Cryogenian period and was followed by the Cambrian period, at the base of the Phanerozoic eon, and was followed by the Cambrian.
