The first permanent New England settlement, on the south-eastern Massachusetts coast in Cape Cod Bay. It was settled by the Pilgrim Fathers in 1620 and grew slowly under the leadership of William Bradford, profiting from the fur trade with the Native Americans. Overshadowed after 1630 by Massachusetts, it joined the New England Confederation in 1643. King Philip’s War (1675–76) began on its frontier. In 1691 it was incorporated into Massachusetts.
