单词 carbon sequestration
释义
carbon sequestration

Chemical Engineering
  • The process of removing carbon from the atmosphere by capture and long-term storage. In nature, trees, forests, and oceans capture carbon. Captured carbon from millennia is in the sequestered form of oil, gas, and coal located underground in oil and gas reservoirs and coal seams. Modern technologies are now being developed to capture carbon dioxide to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere in order to reduce the greenhouse effect and control global warming.

Economics
  • Reduction of the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere either by capturing them at source, for example in the chimney of a power plant, and storing the CO2 in a reservoir, or by creating and improving carbon sinks. Sequestration complements environmental policies that encourage the reduction of emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. The high cost of ‘capture-ready’ power plants and the availability of cheaper alternatives for power generation have made early sequestration projects economically unattractive.
