A material that is an antiferromagnet in the absence of an external magnetic field but undergoes a first-order transition to a phase in which there is a nonzero ferromagnetic moment when the external magnetic field becomes sufficiently large. Iron(II) chloride is an example of a material that can act as a metamagnet.
