specializing in experimental design, whose career was largely in the USA. After graduation from Cambridge U, Kempthorne joined Sir Ronald Fisher and Yates at Rothamsted in 1941. In 1947 he joined the fledgling Statistics Department at ISU where his 44 research students included Graybill and Wilk. He was the COPSS Fisher Lecturer in 1965, the President of the IMS in 1985, and was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the RSS in 1988.
