1. (Eurasian blackbird, Turdus merula) A thrush (family Turdidae), with a melodious song, in which the adult male is black with a yellow eye-ring and bill and the female and juveniles are dark brown. They are native to woods and gardens throughout temperate Eurasia and North Africa but have been introduced elsewhere, are territorial while breeding, and are omnivorous.
2. (New World blackbird) A bird belonging to one of about 26 species (family Icteridae) that are mainly black or dark brown in colour, with markings in red, orange, or yellow. They occur throughout the New World.
