Users of the Internet who send spam often obtain the email addresses using special-purpose tools known as address harvesters. These tools can examine the postings in social media and Web pages for addresses. A spamblock is a way of defeating these tools: it consists of writing the text of the address in such a way that someone who genuinely wants to send an email is able to do so, but in such a way that a harvester is unable to detect the text. An example of this is ‘d.c.ince is my name and email me at now.ac.uk.’
