who spent most of his career in the USA. Mann obtained his PhD in number theory at Vienna U in 1935. He emigrated to New York in 1938 and, after a variety of temporary positions, arrived at Ohio State U in 1946, where he remained until 1964. One of his first research students was Whitney with whom his name is now linked as joint originator of the Mann–Whitney test. In 1964 he moved to U Wisconsin, and subsequently to U Arizona. His many publications show clearly his love of analytic number theory and its applications to experimental design.
