单词 Biot, Jean-Baptiste (1774–1862)
释义
Biot, Jean-Baptiste (1774–1862)

Astronomy
  • In 1803 he investigated the meteorite fall at L’Aigle in France. The Swiss physicist Marc Auguste Pictet-Turretin (1752–1825) had suggested that meteorites fell from the sky, and E. F. F. Chladni had speculated that they were the remains of a shattered planet, but the idea was generally dismissed. By questioning witnesses of the fall and analysing specimens of meteorites and of the ground where they lay, Biot was able to demonstrate that meteorites have a cosmic origin. This was the first properly scientific study of meteorites.

Chemical Engineering
  • A French professor of mathematics, physics, and astronomy, he made the first balloon ascent ever undertaken for scientific purposes in 1804 together with Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac (1778–1850). He was particularly interested in the polarization of light and his observations laid the foundations of the polarimetric analysis of sugar. He evolved an experiment using a metal sphere and two metal hemispheres to show that there is no electric charge on the inside of a hollow charged conductor but instead it is all on the outside.
