Primate and archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church in Cyprus (1950–77), he reorganized the movement for enosis (the union of Cyprus with Greece). He was exiled (1956–59) by the British for allegedly supporting the EOKA terrorist campaign of Colonel Grivas against the British and Turks. Makarios was elected President of Cyprus (1960–76). A coup by Greek officers in 1974 forced his brief exile to London, but he was reinstated in 1975 and continued in office until his death.
