An important archaeological site in northern Newfoundland, the only confirmed Viking settlement in the Americas. Excavations have uncovered foundations of turf‐walled houses unlike any dwellings built by indigenous cultures, but identical to Viking structures in Iceland and Greenland. Norse construction is proved by associated finds, including a spindle‐whorl, a stone lamp, a bronze ring‐headed pin, iron nails, and a smith’s hearth. Radio‐carbon datings from the structures range from 700 to 1080 ad, concentrating in the late 10th century, which corresponds to the period of Norse Vinland sagas. Identification with Leif Ericsson, however, is purely speculative.
