A Burman dynasty that brought unified rule after an interregnum following the state of Pagan’s collapse. Its founder, Tabinshweti (1512–50), and his successor, Bayinnaung (fl.c.1570), subdued the Shans and Mons, conquered Tenasserim, and overran Thai states in Siam. However, the Thais broke free and in 1600 sacked Pegu, which, except for a brief period, was the Toungoo capital until 1634. From 1635 when Ava, two months’ journey by river from the delta, became the capital, there was growing estrangement between the Toungoo and the Mons. Weakened by raids from Manipur, Toungoo fell when the Mons captured Ava.
