Bartlett obtained his doctorate from Cambridge U in 1932 (supervised by Wishart). After a year at UCL, he worked for ICI before joining the faculty at Cambridge U. During the Second World War he was seconded to the Ministry of Supply where he worked alongside Anscombe, David Kendall (his former research student), and Moran. Appointed Professor of Mathematical Statistics at Manchester U in 1947, he subsequently held posts at UCL (1960) and Oxford U (1967). He was elected FRS in 1961 and was the COPSS Fisher Lecturer in 1964. He was President of the RSS in 1966 and was awarded its Guy Medal in Silver in 1952 and in Gold in 1969.
