regarded as the founder of modern probability theory. A graduate of the École Polytechnique, his first paper was published in 1905. After study under Hadamard, he obtained his doctorate in 1912. After a period as Professor at the École Nationale des Mines (where he supervised Matheron), he returned in 1920 to the École Polytechnique (where he supervised Mandelbrot).
