A fast-growing tree (family Malvaceae), native to tropical Central and South America but cultivated widely elsewhere, that reaches a height of up to 30 m, and yields a very light, spongy wood. Despite the low density of its wood, because it is broad-leaved the balsa tree is classed as a hardwood.
