specializing in queueing theory (see queue) and stochastic processes. A graduate of Cambridge U, where his research advisors were Whittle and David Kendall, Kingman was appointed Professor at Sussex U at the age of 27, moving to a chair at Oxford U in 1969. He was elected FRS in 1971, and was awarded the Royal Society’s Royal Medal in 1983. In 1977 he was the IMS Wald Lecturer. From 1985 to 2001 he was Vice-Chancellor of U Bristol. He was President of the RSS in 1987, and was awarded its Guy Medal in Silver in 1981 and in Gold in 2013. He was made an Honorary Fellow of the Society in 1993. In 1990 he was President of the LMS. He has been Director of the Isaac Newton Institute (2001–6) and Chairman of the UK’s Statistics Commission (2001–3). He was knighted in 1985.
