An insect resembling a dragonfly, but smaller and slimmer and in most species holding its wings along its body when at rest. It is a predator of smaller insects both as an adult and nymph. Nymphs are aquatic and adult damselflies seldom move far from the water in which they hatched. There are nearly 3000 species in the suborder Zygoptera (order Odonata), found worldwide except for Antarctica.
