A Native American rising, which resulted from encroachments on Native lands in New England. It was led by Metacomet (or King Philip), chief of the Wampanoag, whose lands were in southern Massachusetts, but Mohawks of the Iroquois Confederacy devastated frontier settlements in northern and western interior New England as well. Before Philip was betrayed and killed by Benjamin Church in 1676 near Kingston, Rhode Island, Native Americans had raided within 32 km (20 miles) of Boston and one out of every ten adult males in Massachusetts had been killed.
