A Chinese rocket series whose Long March 1 launched the nation's first satellite on 24 April 1970. That two-stage Long March rocket was a modified intercontinental ballistic missile manufactured by Shanghai Xinxin Machine Factory. A series of Long March rockets have since been successfully launched between 2003 and 2016, advancing China’s capabilities in space. For instance, a Long March 2F rocket launched the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft in October 2003, putting China's first person into space, and a Long March 3A rocket successfully launched the Chang’e 1 lunar orbiting spacecraft in 2007. As of March 2016, there have been 225 Long March missions. In November 2016, China successfully launched its new three-stage Long March-5 rocket from China’s Wenchang Launch facility. The rocket measures 57 m high and 5 m wide, with a mass of 879,000 kg; it can launch a 25 000-kg payload into low Earth orbit or an 8 000-kg payload into geosynchronous orbit. In July 2017, the second launch of the March 5 rocket ended in failure (possibly a rocket-engine anomaly) and the loss of a communications satellite. The rockets continue to launch, the latest being in April 2018 when a Long March 4C rocket successfully deployed three Chinese military surveillance spacecraft and an experimental nanosatellite into orbit.
