1. A basin closed at both ends by sluice gates which links two sections of a canal that are at different elevations. A boat enters through one open gate. This is then closed and the other gate opened, allowing water to fill the basin or drain from it, raising or lowering the boat as required until it is at the level of the canal on the other side of the lock.
