One of the sighting aids used by astronauts in space. The 14×40 binoculars have a gyrostabilized system that helps a crew member locate and retain the target, as the image remains stable and clear in spite of hand tremor or other vibrations. NASA's gyrostabilized binoculars are electrically powered by six alkaline AA batteries and operate for up to three hours on one battery pack.
Space shuttle astronauts have access to gyrostabilized and two other types of binoculars: the small 10×40 version with high magnification and wide field of view, and 7×14 binoculars with high magnification and a close focal distance.
