A device for measuring rotation and orientation. Mechanical versions have a spinning disk mounted inside a series of gimbals, with constraints on the relative motion of their axes of rotation. By detecting relative movement of the various components it is possible to detect 3D rotation. Electronic versions rely on MEMS technology to produce vibrating structures whose deflections can be analysed to determine rotation.
