单词 Sikh Wars (1845–49)
释义
Sikh Wars (1845–49)

World History
  • Two conflicts between the Sikhs of Lahore and the English East India Company. The First Sikh War (1845–46) took place when Sikh troops crossed the Sutlej River into British India. After the drawn battles of Mudki and Firuzshah, the British defeated the Sikhs at Aliwal and Sobraon. By the Treaty of Lahore (1846) Britain obtained the cession of the Jullundar Doab, took Kashmir for Gulab Singh, and established control of the Lahore government through a Resident. Sikh discontent led to the Second Sikh War (1848–49); the bloody Battle of Chillianwallah was followed by the decisive British victory at Gujerat over an army of 60,000 Sikhs. The governor-general, Lord Dalhousie, annexed the Punjab in 1849.
