A military engagement in the War of 1812, fought in present‐day south‐western Ontario, Canada. Following their abandonment of Detroit, British and Native American forces under General Proctor and Tecumseh were overtaken and decisively defeated near Chatham on the Thames River by a US force under General William Henry Harrison. The US victory, together with Tecumseh’s death in the battle, destroyed the Native American confederacy and the British and Native American alliance and secured the US north‐west frontier.
