who became a professor at Berlin in 1919, moving in 1943 to the Max Planck Institute at Göttingen. He is best known for his suggestion and discovery in 1912 of X-ray diffraction, for which he was awarded the 1914 Nobel Prize for physics. He also made important contributions to relativity theory.
