The angle subtended at a star by a baseline equal to the distance travelled by the Sun in a given time, such as a year or century. It can be used to estimate the average distance of a sample of stars which has a common motion relative to the Sun, such as the stars which define the local standard of rest. Care must be taken to distinguish other populations, such as RR Lyrae variables, which have different speeds and directions of motion.
