单词 astrobiology
释义
astrobiology

Physics
  • The study of life beyond the earth. This subject is only in its very early days. It hopes to find signs of life on other planets, including extrasolar planets, and to investigate how life is affected by its environment.

Astronomy
  • The scientific study of the possibility of life elsewhere in the Universe; also known as exobiology. Astrobiology embraces branches of biology (for example microbiology, biochemistry, and ecology) in addition to astronomy. Considerations include assessment of the likely conditions required for the origin and development of life, and the means of detecting such life. Investigations such as the study of life in hostile environments on Earth, the search for water on Mars and sampling of the soil, the study of organic molecules in meteorites and comets, the synthesis of prebiotic compounds, and the various SETI programmes based on radio astronomy can be considered part of astrobiology.

Space Exploration
  • The study of life in the universe. It is especially concerned with the origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life. Astrobiology combines biology, astronomy, geology, chemistry, and other sciences. NASA has an Astrobiology Institute at its Ames Research Center, which works with academic and other research organizations to conduct research, promote the subject, and train researchers.

http://www.astrobiology.com/ Superb gateway to astrobiology on the internet. With news of astrobiology articles appearing in scientific literature, the site features comprehensive links to astrobiology resources, from spacesuit design and life-support systems to exobiology and terraforming.

Chemistry
  • The study of life not on earth. One of the main points of interest in astrobiology is to see whether the chemistry of any life found elsewhere in the universe is the same as that of life on earth. Astrobiology is still in the early stages of its development.

Biology
  • The study of life on other planets. Many disciplines—including astrophysics, biochemistry, microbiology, and geology—are combined in looking for signs of extraterrestrial life in the past or present. The work of astrobiologists provides insights into the possible origin of life on earth, for instance whether living organisms were initially carried to earth from space by meteorites (the panspermia theory). Studies of bacteria that live in extreme conditions on earth (extremophiles) indicate how organisms might live in the harsh conditions elsewhere in space, and survive as spores for very long periods. Astrobiology also contributes to our understanding of the conditions necessary for life and how they might have evolved on earth or on other planets.
