A major political party in Australia. The original party emerged in 1910 as an alliance of various groups opposed to the Australian Labor Party, led by Forrest. They were known for a while as the Fusion Party, adopting the title Liberal in 1913. The new Liberal Party was created in 1944 by Robert Menzies, and a Liberal–Country coalition has alternated with Labor since then, being in office under Malcolm Fraser (1975–83), John Howard (1996–2007), Tony Abbott (2013–15), and Malcolm Turnbull 2015– .
