In 1954 Yang and Robert Mills generalized the idea of a gauge theory from the U(1) symmetry of electrodynamics to a non-Abelian group. Two years later Yang and T. D. Lee suggested that parity might be violated in weak interactions. This was soon found to be the case, resulting in Yang and Lee winning the 1957 Nobel Prize for physics for making this suggestion.
