Space Exploration

The European Space Agency’s first deep space mission, part of an ambitious international effort to solve the mysteries surrounding Halley’s Comet. It was also the first to image a comet nucleus. Launched by an Ariane rocket in July 1985, Giotto passed within 600 km of Halley’s Comet’s nucleus on 13 March 1986 and found the first evidence of organic material on a comet. On 2 July 1990, it flew within 23 000 km of the Earth, which diverted its path to encounter its next target: comet Grigg–Skjellerup, on 10 July 1992. Giotto made the closest comet fly-by to date by any spacecraft (about 200 km from the comet’s nucleus) and studied the interaction between the solar wind, the interplanetary magnetic field, and the comet itself. The mission completed in 1992.
