Those young stars concentrated in the spiral arms of galaxies; they are extreme Population I stars. Their youth is indicated by their high content of heavy elements, by their proximity to the gas and dust from which they formed, and by the presence among them of massive stars which have only a short lifetime. They are found in loose open clusters or associations.
