Mathematics
  • Scottish mathematician who was the outstanding British mathematician of the generation following Newton’s. He developed and extended the subject of calculus. His textbook on the subject contains important original results, but the Maclaurin series, which appears in it, is just a special case of the Taylor series known considerably earlier. He also obtained notable results in geometry and wrote a popular textbook on algebra.


Statistics
  • Orphaned by the age of nine, Maclaurin was a student at Glasgow U when aged eleven. At the age of nineteen he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at Aberdeen U. In 1719 he was elected FRS. In 1725 he was appointed Professor at Edinburgh U, where he remained for the rest of his life. A lunar crater is named after him.
