A genus comprising more than 500 species of succulent flowering plants (family Xanthorrhoeaceae) native to southern Africa, the Middle East, and some Indian Ocean islands. Aloe vera (true aloe) is cultivated (and probably extinct in the wild) for pharmaceutical use.
