单词 almshouse
释义
almshouse

World History
  • A sanctuary for the reception and succour of the poor. Almshouses were originally those sections of medieval monasteries in which alms (food and money) were distributed. Most medieval foundations were made by clergymen. Privately financed dwellings, usually for the support of the old and infirm, have also been called almshouses. From the 16th century the charitable relief supplied by almshouses was supplemented by a series of Poor Laws.
