A wave motion in a current of air as it descends below an upper layer of stable air, after its forced rise over a mountain barrier, which sets up vertical oscillations (also called a standing, rotor, hill, or mountain wave). The wavelength is c.5–15 km with an amplitude of c.500 m. Lee waves are often indicated by higher wind speeds and lenticular clouds.
