Astronomy

A series of space probes launched by the former Soviet Union for testing spacecraft equipment and flight techniques. Zonds 1 and 2 in 1964 were launched towards Venus and Mars to test long-distance communications, but contact was lost with both. Zond 3 in 1965 July took photographs of the parts of the Moon’s farside not covered by Luna 3. Zonds 4–8 in 1968–70 were rehearsals for a planned manned Soyuz mission around the Moon and back that was cancelled after the success of Apollo.

A series of seven Soviet interplanetary and lunar spacecraft launched 1964–70. Zond 1 and Zond 2 were sent towards Venus and Mars in 1964 but contact with the ships was lost. Zond 3 flew past the Moon in July 1965. Zond 5 (September 1968), Zond 6 (November 1968), Zond 7 (August 1969), and Zond 8 (October 1970) all went around the Moon and returned to Earth. They were later revealed to be modified Soyuz spacecraft being tested for a crewed flight to the Moon.
