The tear gland, present in the eyelids of some vertebrates. The fluid (tears) produced by this gland cleanses and lubricates the exposed surface of the eye; it also contains the enzyme lysozyme, which helps to destroy bacteria. Tears drain into the nose through the lacrimal duct.
